Death Valley

We decided to spend some time in the Dunes

These large dunes are great fun! This time of year the temperatures are perfect.
The shadows at sunrise and sunset create graceful contours.

We saw very few people during our visit to Scotty's Castle. These structures, known when they were built in the
late 1920's as Death Valley Ranch, have many "tall-stories" associated with them.

The Harmony Borax Works is very near our campground and we enjoy visiting it each year.
This desolate site was the scene of frenzied activity from 1883 to 1888.

We also visited two other favorites - Artist's Palette (on Artist Drive) and Ubeheve Crater.
Ubehebe Crater was created only 3000 years ago by an explosion, when magma heated
groundwater - the resulting steam blew the overlying rock away. This explosion
covered 6 square miles of desert with volcanic debris 150 feet deep!

As the sun sets in the evening it is time to return to our Furnace Creek campsite
